about

Then God said, “Let us make man[a] in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” Genesis 1:26

The Image of God, Imago Dei, is often interpreted as an ATTRIBUTE of mankind, such as our free will, intelligence, or wisdom. But perhaps Imago Dei is better understood as a FUNCTION of man: to be the Image of God on Earth, to act as stewards and proxies of the perfect Almighty on Earth -- a function which our sin has broken and corrupted.

This song is an exploration of this idea as it relates to the problem of Evil and the divine nature of Christ. Is it possible that Evil exists on earth because we have shirked our responsibility to be the image of God -- the image which Christ portrayed perfectly as he spoke "If you have seen me, you have seen the Father" (John 14:9)?

lyrics

His fingers have formed it
a shape in the mud.
His breath transforms it
to flesh and bone and blood.

The host of heaven
Gathers round to stare
At the curious earthen vessel
He has chosen to bear

Created to rule
as a priesthood of kings.
But an act of rebellion
shatters everything.

They curse and covet
They maim and they mar
They lust and kill and slather filth
Upon the rent and scarred

Death and sorrow,
Injustice and pain.
"Where is your GOD now?"
Is the scoffer's refrain.

If we could only clean
The stains and cracks,
Might we steal a fleeting glimpse
Behind the leering mask
that hides

He lived as a man
All our temptations he felt.
Yet He healed the sick and blessed the poor
And loved with no thought of Himself.

They begged him, "Lord,
Will you show us the Father?"
He said "My friends, as you've seen me
You need see no other,
For I am..."
