"Miracles" is one of those tracks that "just happened", when lyrical, musical, and sonic ideas sort of bumped into one another during a weekend session of unscripted recording.
Musically, I was trying to create something to be a vehicle for some blues guitar playing without resorting to the usual cliches, and settled on this slow E groove punctuated with a chromatic refrain of major chords moving by descending minor thirds.
Once the groove was laid down, it just seemed criminal not to put some lyrics to this piece. "These are miracles" became my working hook, and soon I developed verses exploring various everyday points at which natural explanations seem to fall short of our observations.
I did not, however, ignore that initial desire for a blues guitar vehicle, and found enough space to include a moody psychedelic-inspired solo between the verses.
Hope you enjoy this track!
lyrics
A cosmos in chaos, the elements aswirl
A planet scorched by fire and brine.
Yet Molecular machinery, resists the pull of entropy
forumlates a language of design.
Spare me the natural explanation
This defies imagination:
These are miracles.
Atoms and energy, chart a course through history
on paths that cannot be transgressed
Yet we see realities, choose between possibilities
Matter moved by an act of consciousness.
Spare me the natural explanation
It smacks of deperation
These are miracles.
A man and woman, when the two become as one
Half and half combined to make a whole
A single cell divides itself; and over time her belly swells
A new life, a new mind, a new soul.
Spare me the natural explanation
We are witness to creation
There are miracles.
